born 1954 in Włocławek, is a graduate in Czech and Slovak Philology, essayist, translator, publicist, editor, journalist for the Radio Free Europe, columnist and correspondent for Gazeta Wyborcza, director of the Polish Institute in Prague, cultural attaché at the Polish Embassy in Prague, director of the Vysegrad Festival, editor for the Literatura na Świecie quarterly. He is the member of the Polish Writers’ Society, the recipient of the Jan Masaryk Medal and the Polonia Restituta Order. He has published the book Banici. Rozmowy z czeskimi pisarzami emigracyjnymi. (Outcasts. Conversations with Czech Émigré Writers, 1988), and translated such authors as Václav Havel, Milan Kundera, Bohumil Hrabal and Avigdor Dagan.
