America’s leading authority on contemporary American poetry. She lectures in literature at Harvard University, is active in the American Philosophical Association and the American Academy of Art and Literature. Among her books are those on Shakespeare, Keats, Yeats, Stevens and Heaney, on poetry and criticism, and important works on Miłosz. She holds twenty-five honorary doctorates awarded her by the most important learning institutions in England, Ireland, Norway, Canada, and the USA. She has lectured at countless universities, from Singapore to Germany, Italy, and Ireland. She has been given a Guggenheim Fellowship, for many years served as poetry critic for “The New Yorker,” and has sat on the Pulitzer Prize jury. Her interests also include music, painting, and medicine.
