Born in 1975 in London. As a teenager she danced, tap-danced, and sang; she could have had a career as a singer, or a journalist, but while studying at Cambridge she gained attention as the author of stories she published in anthologies. She procured a contract with a large literary agency, and wrote her first novel while still a student. White Teeth became a worldwide bestseller, while subsequent novels and stories have confirmed the young writer as an exceptional talent. She has also written editorials and essays, and published anthologies of young people’s prose.
