Jón Gnarr is the mayor of Reykjavik. He began his career on the radio. He was a rock musician and played the bass in the Nefrennsli punk band. He gained immense popularity thanks to satirical radio and television programmes. He appeared in several films, of which the better known ones include Íslenski draumurinn (2000) and Maður eins og ég (2002), he also plays in the Næturvaktin, Dagvaktin and Fangavaktin TV series, which he co-writes. He is the author of poetry volumes (Börn ævintýranna, 1988; Torrek, 1989), a novel published by Smekkleysa (Miðnætursólborgin, 1989), and a two-volume autobiography (Indjáninn: skálduð ævisaga, 2006; Sjóræninginn: skálduð ævisaga, 2012).
