Born on the 21st of June, 1945 in Lviv, is a Polish poet, essayist, writer, academic teacher and literary translator. He represents the New Wave generation, signed the Letter of 59, and his art was censored since 1975. In 1982 he emigrated to France, where he lived for 20 years. In 1983, he started working as an editor of Zeszyty Literackie. The artist is also a laureate of the Kościelski Award (1975) and the Neustadt International Prize for Literature in 2004. He is also a member of the Polish Writers’ Union (1973-1983), Polish PEN Club and Polish Academy of Arts and Sciences. Polish candidate for the Nobel Prize for Literature. He teaches at the University of Chicago.
