Debate: Trapped in the decreed truths or in the freedom of chaos?Participants: Paweł Dybel, Dominika Kozłowska, Joanna Tokarska-Bakir Host: Eliza KąckaIn this debate, we will consider the nature of ideological pressures that distort our sense of the stability of democratic order. Conditioned with powerful political emotions, as a community we have been \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"caught\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" into the trap of dichotomy. Fossilised into the division into \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"ours\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" and \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"theirs\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" we are gradually losing the competence of critical assessment of reality, which in turn forces us into a populist trap of rhetoric stemming from the understanding of the world that feeds on simplification. Eager to grasp the phantom principle of reality, we reach for the key of \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"history returning\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\", which in turn becomes a source of projection of justified fears. It is certain that the stake of the game taking place before our eyes is a vision of the future that could depose us from the positions of passive consumers of the social, political, and cultural chaos. What criteria should we apply to order reality? Is it possible at all to elicit such criteria in the culture of multiplied images? Is it, perhaps, our destiny to virtually stalk the ideas, while reality can do perfectly well without them, in the wordless mechanism of returning crises in world democracies?Duration: 7:15 p.m. - 8:45 p.m.Venue: Festival Centre, The Bishop Erazm Ciołek Palace, the branch of the National Museum in Krakow, Kanonicza 17 Street

Debate: A year of the hunter or of the lamb?Participants: Ryszard Koziołek, Aldona Kopkiewicz, Joanna Orska Host: Zofia KrólIn his famous biography of Zbigniew Herbert, Andrzej Franaszek explains that Herbert intended to write A Year of the Lamb, a book that was to answer Miłosz’s A Year of the Hunter. The fundamental disputes about national identity, ethical and aesthetic issues, the role of the poet and poetic language, and social and political involvement that the two exquisite poets conducted for years appears to be a contest of contemporary poetry that has not yet been resolved. In this debate, we will ponder to what degree this dispute, although changing and camouflaged in its form, is still present in contemporary Polish poetry. Has it survived only in historical references, or perhaps its continuation and updating is connected to intensified social and ideological conflict?
