Debate: A year of the hunter or of the lamb?Participants: Ryszard Koziołek, Aldona Kopkiewicz, Joanna Orska Host: Zofia KrólIn his famous biography of Zbigniew Herbert, Andrzej Franaszek explains that Herbert intended to write A Year of the Lamb, a book that was to answer Miłosz’s A Year of the Hunter. The fundamental disputes about national identity, ethical and aesthetic issues, the role of the poet and poetic language, and social and political involvement that the two exquisite poets conducted for years appears to be a contest of contemporary poetry that has not yet been resolved. In this debate, we will ponder to what degree this dispute, although changing and camouflaged in its form, is still present in contemporary Polish poetry. Has it survived only in historical references, or perhaps its continuation and updating is connected to intensified social and ideological conflict?
