Antoni Pawlak


(born in 1952)

Poet, publicist and local government official. He made his debut in 1975. In 1979-1980 he was a member of the editorial office of Puls— an independent literary quarterly. Author of Książeczka wojskowa, which has a cult following. Participant of the strike in the Gdańsk Shipyard in 1980, in 1981 he worked as a member of the Culture Committee of Solidarity in Mazovia Region. Interned during martial law in Poland. In 1989-1993 he worked in the editorial office of Gazeta Wyborcza. In the years 2007-2017, he served as a spokesman for the Mayor of Gdańsk. He wrote around 20 volumes of poetry. In 1983 he received the Kościelski Award, and in 2009 he was awarded the Silver Medal of Merit to Culture — Gloria Artis. In 2011, he was awarded the Officer’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta.
