Monika Herceg | Miłosz Festival

Croatian poet, screenwriter, playwright, editor and activist. Her poetry book Lovostaj, translated into Polish as Okres ochronny by Aleksandra Wojtaszek, won the European Poet of Freedom Award in 2024. She is the author of poetry books  Početne koordinate (2018), Lovostaj. (2019) and Vrijeme prije jezika (2020), as welll as a few plays, including Gdje se kupuju nježnosti, Ubij se, tata, Zakopana ćuda and short stories. Currently she is working on her first novel. In Croatia, she is the most frequently awarded female poet of the young generation and has won many prestigious prizes and distinctions, including: Goran za mlade pjesnike, Kvirin, Fran Galović, Slavić, Mostovi Struge, Na vrh jezika, Biber, Zvonko Milković and Lapis Histriae. She rotks in one of the largest Croatian publishing houses, Fraktura, and is one of the editors of the „Poezija“ magazine. She is the poet member of the Versopolis network, with her works translated into more than 20 languages. She hosts regular meetings on women’s poetry and her work as a gender equality activist has won her the Strašne žene award. Having been forced to leave her family home as a child due to the war, she is currently engaged in initiatives supporting refugees. A physicist by education, she spent her childhood in a small village of Pecki near Petrinji. She is the mother of two and lives and work in Zagreb.
